HP Recalls Laptops Over Fire Risk

List of HP products affected by issue
This time a year ago HP recalled 100,000 computers due to overheating batteries, which expanded a previous recall of 41,000 units over the same issues.
The recall affects just the batteries, not the computer itself.
Consumers should immediately stop using the affected products and go to the HP Battery Recall website to see if their battery is affected and to order a free replacement battery if needed. Some of the affected batteries were also sold as replacements.
HP will replace batteries at no cost, the company said. That might sound like a small percentage, but given how many devices HP shifts in a year, it's still likely to be a fairly substantial figure.
HP is recalling a range of its notebook and mobile workstation computers due to the risk their batteries could burst into flames from overheating.
Some of the affected models are HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, and HP 11 notebooks.
For more information and to determine if their product is affected, consumers may visit the HP Battery Recall website or telephone HP Inc. There, you'll find a special HP Battery Validation Utility to download.
"HP has received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500, with one report of a minor injury involving a first-degree burn to the hand", CSPC said in a statement. Until receiving a replacement, customers will simply need to connect their laptop to a power adaptor to use it. "We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries".
There's also a BIOS update that puts the battery into "Battery Safe Mode" to prevent it from operating in a unsafe way.
The company has also released a new BIOS update to deal with the issue which adds a "battery safety mode". This mode will discharge the battery and prevent it from being recharged until the battery is replaced. If it is, instructions are provided for operating the computer or workstation in Battery Safe Mode.
