Husted Reacts To End Of Trump's Election Commission

Facing Scrutiny, President Trump's “Voter Fraud” Commission Shuts Down

The president's firm stance follows his disbanding of the "election integrity commission" late Wednesday, which was his bid to investigate supposed false votes cast in the 2016 presidential election. A Care2 petition authored by the League of Women Voters had called on the Trump administration to stop the "dangerous and misleading" commission attracted over 12,000 signatures; the White House has finally done the right thing by ending it.

A White House statement blames many states for refusing to provide information to the commission. It went on to say that rather than subject taxpayers to endless legal expenses the president had signed an order to dissolve the body.

"It's telling that even in his announcement to its long overdue demise, President Trump continues the false narrative that there is 'substantial evidence of voter fraud", Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, said January 3.

The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity was established by executive order in May after the president, who won the Electoral College but not the popular vote, insisted repeatedly that Hillary Clinton received approximately 2.9 million more votes because of illegal voting.

Hans Von Spakovsky, a member of the commission and a senior legal fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said in an email to BuzzFeed News that he was disappointed with the commission's dissolution, but understood Trump's reason for doing it, citing the refusal of states to provide data and the pending lawsuits.

Kobach, a vocal supporter of tough voter ID laws, alleged Democrats wanted no investigation.

President Trump disbanded the commission just days before a deadline for detailing how it meant to proceed.

"The fight is not over", she said.

To date, no federal laws have been put in place to limit voting rights and the courts have soundly rejected numerous state restrictions.

The president also tackled developments over North Korea in his Thursday morning tweets - coming after he caused a stir by boasting about the size of his "nuclear button" compared with Kim Jong Un's.

"Since Donald Trump has been in office he has said that states should have tighter voter identification laws which is a dog whistle to those who want to continue to deny African-Americans, Latinos, and Muslims the right to vote, " he said.

"But Trump seems intent on pressing forward and we're going to continue to watch and challenge them at every turn to protect people's voting rights".

The commission was chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, but its driving force was Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Democrats said they feared commissioners would seek ways to make voting harder, especially for African-Americans, Hispanics, and poor people.

Leaders from dozens of states including Democratic-leaning bastions such as NY and Trump-won Republican states such as Texas, either refused to comply with the commission requests completely or rejected them in part citing privacy laws. Indeed, during the Obama administration DHS warned states about using the SAVE database to remove voters from the rolls.
