Winter is a good time to test your home, Teton County Public Health Department response coordinator Rachael Wheeler said.

It is recommended that homeowners retest for radon every 2-5 years or if there have been any structural changes such as an addition or finishing a basement.

Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, radioactive gas that develops in the soil. "Also when we have a patient with lung cancer who's a non-smoker, the first thing we do is check their home for radon". The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year are attributable to radon.

Because radon has no taste, smell or color, a home must be tested to find out how much radon is in the air.

Radon results from the decay of uranium found in almost all soils. High levels of radon in homes, offices and schools can be hazardous to your health. "This means the EPA predicts that homes within our area could have high radon levels". A radon testing kit can be purchased at most home or hardware stores. The aggregated information from the test results will be used to update statewide Radon Potential Maps, which show the likelihood of radon in a specific region. "So we chested in the winter cause that's when your house is closed up and that's where there's the greatest possibility for radon concentration". If your home does have high levels of radon, a qualified radon mitigation contractor can make repairs to solve the problem and protect your family. Residents are asked to follow the instructions when conducting the radon test and to submit results to the Connecticut Department of Public Health Laboratory. The maximum reading for Greene County was 590 pCi/L, the minimum Greene County reading was 0.1 pCi/L, with an average reading of 7.14 pCi/L. Place the small, non-obtrusive test kit in the lowest living level of the home for three to seven days. Most often, a radon mitigation system is installed in the lowest level of homes and ventilated outside above the rooftop to prevent radon gas from entering the house.
