The injured include some women and children. The authorities already closed all schools and restricted movement of people within 500 meters from the camp. Almost a dozen soldiers were killed when militant attacked the camp in 2003.
The terrorists, who attacked the Army camp in Sunjwan, located on the outskirts of Jammu city, were believed to be from the "Afzal Guru squad" of JeM. But they apparently "forgot to do it" in Jammu, according to a Deccan Chronicle report. Both the slain soldiers belonged to Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack incidentally occurred after the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, who died in Tihar jail. At least, two persons were injured in security forces' pellet firing on protesters.
In Saturday's attack, the terrorists struck before dawn and managed to sneak into the camp from the rear side of the base after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on its periphery.
An official said it was premature to say whether the terrorists infiltrated from the Line of Control (LoC) or International Border (IB).
Later, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Ahmedabad, Mr. Singh said, "You should be rest assured that Army and security forces are giving a befitting reply to the attack".
Meanwhile sources identified the deceased as Madan Lal Chaudhary of 4 Jakli, Ashraf Mir of 1 Jakli, a resident of Maidanpora, Lolab, Kupwara and the injured were identified as Maj Avijit Singh of 6 Mahar (head injury), L/Nk Bahadur Singh of 1 Jakli (multiple injuries), Havaldar Abdul Hamid Rashid of 1 Jakli (head), Paramjeet Kaur (40), Neha (20) daughter of the deceased Hony Lt Madan and Somati Jena (head injury). They were initially taken to Military Hospital Satwari and afterwards shifted to GMC hospital. Assembly speaker Kavinder Gupta said that the number of Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshis living in the area was increasing and it counted as a security threat.
She also wished the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.
Director General of Police, S P Vaid; IGP, Jammu, S D S Jamwal, senior officers of Army, Police and civil administration were present on the occasion. Since terrorists are holed up inside the family quarters, we are moving very cautiously.
He added that after the attack, reinforcements of the Army's Special Forces and members of the J&K police's counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) rushed to the spot and cordoned off the whole area amid a fierce gunfight.
Chief minister Mehbooba Muft expressed anguish over the militant attack and the loss of life. "Deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack in #Sunjwan today".
