Carter Page: FBI 'shredded' Constitution by eavesdropping on him

Horowitz: The Memo Farce

The surveillance of Page, and the evidence the feds used to obtain a warrant for it, is at the heart of a Republican-authored memo that President Trump has latched onto as proof of the FBI's bias against him.

The FBI's surveillance of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, which Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee criticize in a memo declassified last week, shows investigators putting a lot of time and effort into a line of inquiry that apparently led nowhere.

The memo also cites then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe as saying that the FBI could not have obtained the FISA warrant without the unverified Trump dossier produced by Steele.

Trump has also previously said he never met Page, and even called him a "low-level member" of his campaign.

"We were part of an informal group", Page said, adding that they had met several times all over the globe.

Page disputed the dossier, claiming he never met with Russian energy magnate Igor Sechin and was never offered a "19 percent stake" in the oil company to remove sanctions on Russia. When asked what he thinks those documents would show, Page said, "I have no idea".

The letter was sent during a dispute about edits on a manuscript Page had written. Page has denied the assertions.

"I certainly have been in a number of meetings with him and I've learned a tremendous amount from him", he said.

The FBI has reportedly been investigating Page for his possible involvement in a Russian-related espionage matter since 2013, but Page has not been charged with anything.

Podobnyy, who had diplomatic immunity, fled the country. During their meeting, Page provided documents to the diplomat which he claimed on "GMA" were just notes from a course he was teaching at New York University. McClatchy reported past year that in 2008, the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan sent a cable to the U.S. State Department describing how Page had met with government officials in the country, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, about possibly working for their oil companies. "He struck me just as someone who had developed some unusual academic views ... and wanted to have them published", the editor says. In the Federal Bureau of Investigation court filings, spy recruiters were overheard speaking about "the attempted use of Male-1 as an intelligence source for Russian Federation", the court record says.
