NYC bomber Ahmed Rahimi sentenced to life in prison
A federal court in Manhattan sentenced Ahmad Khan Rahimi to life in prison for planting and detonating bombs in the USA states of NY and New Jersey in 2016, the Justice Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
A New Jersey man who planted two bombs in the Chelsea section of Manhattan in September 2016 has been sentenced to life in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of NY announced on Tuesday.
Rahimi used household goods to create a bomb packed into a pressure cooker and wired to a flip-phone detonator, which he placed on the busy NY street on September 17, 2016.
"It's inexplicable that anyone would do that intentionally", Berman said. "It is not. Today's sentencing - of life in prison - should be the strongest deterrent to future acts of terror".
Rahimi, 30, who formerly lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was caught bragging about his notoriety over a jailhouse phone during his trial, and he later sent a letter to a crony in Germany claiming that only "Allah will be my Judge".
Pauline Nelson, a mother of four who was driving near the bomb when it went off, shot Rahimi daggers as she railed against his courtroom demeanor. "You sit down and laugh", Nelson, 48, said.

DeGeneres also asked him if he knew that Timberlake would be entering his section for his "Can't Stop the Feeling" finale. Timberlake's phone call to DeGeneres comes days after he had to defend his performance at the Super Bowl LII .
"Less than a year-and-a-half after his attacks, Rahimi has now been tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison", said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman.
He was convicted in October on all eight counts brought against him, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place.
Rahimi, a naturalised USA citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, was shot several times but survived.
He placed another bomb several blocks away.
He allegedly placed a small pipe bomb on the route of a charity running race in New Jersey, which exploded without injuring anyone, and then planted the two bombs in Chelsea. "His clear intention was to take as many lives as possible".
Rahimi, a naturalized USA citizen who was born in Afghanistan, was arrested after a gunfight with New Jersey police, who found he was carrying a journal with praise for Islamic terrorists and promises of violence.
