Over 40 people infected with HIV in UP after quack from Unnao uses common syringe
At least 46 people have been infected with HIV in a tehsil in the last 10 months, allegedly after a quack used a common syringe to administer injections, prompting the state government to intensify its efforts to nab the culprit, an official said.
Sushil Choudhury, the official, said police were looking for Rajendra Yadav, who fled Bangarmau, a small town in Uttar Pradesh state, after the HIV infections were detected in December past year.
The villagers said they once in a while observed Yadav changing the needles. The camps were set up after several suspected HIV cases showed up amid routine testing at district hospitals late past year, he said.
Since India is plagued by a shortage of real doctors, the Associated Press reports that millions of poor people seek out fake doctors like Yadav for cheap treatment.
