The UN's International Commission of Inquiry on Syria condemned the attacks, which cause collateral damage among the very people the government of Syria swore to protect.

The US said there was "obvious evidence" of recent chlorine gas attacks, including in eastern Ghouta. Russia, Iran and the European Union remain adamantly opposed to US President Donald Trump's efforts to "fix" a deal which he insists is "deeply flawed", both in terms of preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear weapon as well as countering its ongoing ballistic missile tests.

Turkish foreign minister added that "one of the main goals of the United States in the region is to influence Iran's and Turkey's growing friendships", adding that the two countries must continue to work on resolving regional problems, especially in Syria together.

Meanwhile, Turkey dispatched a large military convoy deep inside rebel-held territory to establish an observation post at Tel al-Eiss, close to the front line with government forces, according to activists who filmed the convoy's movements.

At least 80 people were killed on Tuesday in government air and artillery strikes on besieged areas of the capital Damascus.

Two children and a woman were killed in the town of Saqba, the war monitor said. The monitoring group did not mention allegations of chlorine use in Tuesday's attacks.

The Syrian army on Wednesday said it intercepted an Israeli missile attack on a military outpost near Damascus, Agence France-Presse reported.

The latest surge in violence began in late December and coincides with the winding down of the fight against the Islamic State in eastern Syrian, which freed up thousands of Syrian government forces to take on rebels and al-Qaida-allied fighters in their last few enclaves elsewhere in the country.

The onslaught came a day after a rash of airstrikes battered Syrian opposition areas, killing more than 28 people around the country and striking at hospitals and residential buildings in the northwestern Idlib province.

"Right now the military role is clearly defined and right now that's to support the SDF", said Jarrard, who gathered with other American troops and commanders at the Manbij outpost.

"We implore the global community to speak with one voice, taking every opportunity to publicly pressure the Assad regime, and its supporters, to cease its use of chemical weapons and hold those responsible accountable for these brutal attacks".

Ambassador Haley also made remarks condemning a Russian draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council meant to address the chemical weapons issue. Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia fired back, accusing the United States and the United Kingdom of "slandering" Russia and "spreading a mountain of lies". "However, this desire [of the U.S.] will not be fulfilled".

Over the weekend rebels shot down a Russian jetfighter over the province and killed its pilot on the ground after he ejected.

Turkey began deploying forces in an observer role to the rebel-held Idlib in October as part of a "de-escalation" agreement with Iran and Russian Federation to stabilize the lines of conflict in the war-torn country.
