Watch: Drama At The Luge As Red-Hot Favourite Screws-Up In Final For Major Upset

Although Ridgefield native Tucker West saw his struggles continue on the second day of the luge men's singles competition at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he and the rest of the USA Luge program did have cause to celebrate.

It was a tough break for Loch in PyeongChang, but that left open the opportunity for David Gleirscher to capture gold, and American Chris Mazdzer to win silver, marking the U.S.' first men's singles medal in the luge.

Mazdzer, a 29-year-old from MA in his third Olympic games, essentially clinched the medal stand yesterday with a terrific third run.

Mazdzer slid into gold medal contention on Saturday, giving the underdog United States team a glimpse of hope while competing against beasts in the field, such as Germany and Austria.

Gleirscher had a four-run cumulative time of 3:10.702, finishing.026 ahead of Mazdzer (3:10.728) and.230 ahead of Ludwig (3:10.932). It's a huge jump in performance for Mazdzer though, who finished 13th at the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games. It was on his third run that Mazdzer really clinched his medal. But everything fell apart in the final run as Loch looked a shell of his self, unable to control his line down the hill. Mazdzer's medal was the Team USA's sixth all time in the luge, which was introduced to the Winter Games in 1964.

Scores of flights canceled as storm pummels US Midwest
The Des Moines Register reported that three to seven inches of snow fell in northern Iowa Friday morning. Weather service meteorologist Charles Mott said the morning rush in Chicago "is gonna be trouble".

Noticeably absent from the medal ceremony: Felix Loch, the German powerhouse who won gold at the past two Winter Games.

Chris Mazdzer just did what no American man has ever done.

Loch had won gold in the last two Olympics in men's singles.

The U.S. had already medaled in women's singles luge - Erin Hamlin was the first to do so, winning bronze in 2014 - as well as doubles luge.
