USA topple Sweden to cap fairytale run with first ever Olympic curling gold

Women's hockey

After the last Olympics, team captain John Shuster was cut by USA Curling.

Nearly inexplicably, the Minnesotan was ridiculed on social media over those results.

The U.S. Men's Curling team stunned the world by winning the gold medal at the 2018 Olympics, but the improbable feat was not enough to get the team better seats on the long flight home.

Oh, fine then. The Americans and Swedes are so close that they actually Facetimed between the semifinal and final.

John Shuster, John Landsteiner, Matt Hamilton and Tyler George all received the wrong medals.

Shuster recalled how hard-luck speed skater Dan Jansen of Wisconsin struggled through three Olympics although favored in many of his races.

Look no further than Shuster, who delivered the shot of a lifetime Saturday to essentially clinch the title with two full ends - like innings, for those of us who need an explainer in baseball-like terms - still to go.

In the three Olympics games prior to this, Canada had taken home gold in the event. Etched on the golds were "Womens Curling". How unlikely? The team had lost four of its first six games in South Korea but got hot at the right time.

Shuster rededicated himself to the sport and formed a team with other players rejected by USA Curling and beat their own replacements along the way. Be a witness as they finally make it to their rightful owners- Korea or Sweden- at 7:05 p.m.

"Believe it or not I don't hate attention", said Hamilton, a sweeper who helps guide Shuster's pinpoint placements of the rock.

Delta tweeted back that while it was honored to fly the gold medal winners back home, the airline had no upgrades to offer for that ride. In both games, we saw a ragtag team of rejects take down a powerhouse to ultimately win gold. Always welcoming and really, I think, embodies what all of us would hope humanity can be.

Ivanka Trump even posed for photos while holding Shuster's son Luke, 4.

Rubinovich says usually the Olympic Open House draws a good crowd of between 200 and 300 people, but this year's attendance shattered all previous records with a total of 390.

The American skipper had a double takeout of Swedish rocks leaving only five USA stones near the bull's eye for the big score.

But Shuster brushed off the mix-up as the team celebrated their famous and unexpected victory, which was sealed by a rare five-pointer with two ends to go. However, he and his teammates managed to earn their spot in the Olympics, and now they've carved out a place for themselves as the first USA team to ever claim the gold in the sport.

The gold medals for the women were accidentally handed to the US men on Saturday. "Especially when it's so many people that you've known your whole life".
