BJP may ally with NPF to form govt in Nagaland: Rijiju
Neiphiu Rio, who has been elected as the leader of the BJP-Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-led alliance government, will take oath for the fourth time (2003-08, 2008-13, 2013-14) as chief minister on March 8.
The wafer thin majority of PDA may see a not-so-stable government in Nagaland.
The Naga Peoples Front (NPF), which was a BJP ally but parted ways before the assembly elections, bagged 27 seats. The BJP instead chose to stick with its pre-poll partner - Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). "We are also receiving support from one NPP MLA", he claimed.
"We are in a comfortable position to form the government and the NDPP-BJP alliance will stake claim to form the government soon", BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said.
The current political drama in Nagaland and the tug-of-war between the two regional parties are the outcome of a clash of personalities. The country is governed by anti-defection law provided for by the 10th Schedule of the Constitution that seeks to mandate morality in politics. The latter, however, was back in contention after Mr. Zeliang was forced to quit in February 2017 following violence over the NPF government's bid to hold civic polls with 33% quota for women. "Any other claims or declaration by MLAs of NPP in Nagaland in this regard to the exigency of the government formation may therefore be ignored as invalid".
The party has also tried to queer the pitch by asking the party to support NPF in a quid pro quo manner as the party also supported BJP in Manipur a year ago to form a government against the Congress. The governor, in all fairness, had given him (CM) 48 hours to prove his majority. However, NPF is still seeking the support of BJP in a quid pro quo manner. It would not affect their BJP-led Government in Manipur, he said and further added that they would continue to have them (NPF) in Manipur Government.
Just before the elections, the BJP broke ties with the National People's Party (NPF), with whom it has shared power all these years.
The NPF tried to swing the BJP in its favour, with Zeliang even reportedly threatening to withdraw from the alliance government in Manipur.
