Mexico says Playa del Carmen safe despite U.S. travel alert

The Canadian government issuing a travel warning for Playa del Carmen, after an explosion on a tourist ferry last month were more than 20 people were hurt.

Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquín González issued a statement last night in which he played down the security risks and said local officials did not know why the USA had barred its employees from visiting the town.

Both the closure of the consular agency and the restrictions on personnel travel are in place "until further notice", according to Nauert.

Initial reports had indicated the explosion was caused either by a gas leak or engine failure, but a security alert posted on the U.S. Embassy website the blast was caused by an explosive device.

"All tourism and economic activity in Playa del Carmen continues in a normal manner", the government of Quintana Roo state said in a statement, noting that hotel occupancy at the resort was 80 per cent.

Playa del Carmen is the closest resort town to the island of Cozumel and about 40 miles southwest of Cancun.

On March 1, an further explosive device was found on a different ferry, following the first explosion in February.

Canada has issued a new travel advisory for the popular Mexican tourist destination Playa del Carmen.
