The Bharatiya Janata Party's reign in alliance with regional parties in three north-eastern States began on a youthful note on Tuesday with Conrad Kongkal Sangma, 40, being sworn in as Meghalaya Chief Minister.
Meghalaya is a state known for its political instability ever since its inception in 1972, barring the last eight years of Congress rule under the leadership of Mukul Sangma.
The Hills State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) has won two seats in the election, but its president has lost to an independent candidate by only 76 votes.
It was a swearing in ceremony unlike Meghalaya had ever witnessed before as BJP rallied its top leaders including Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP President Amit Shah and probable Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio among others, as 11 MLAs of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance were sworn in at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
PM Narendra Modi congratulated Sangma on becoming the chief minister.
As per the information, as soon as Conrad assumed his office, he was briefed by Chief Secretary Y Tsering and other senior government officials on the fiscal health of Meghalaya and the issues before his government to be solved as soon as possible.
Everyone Is Going Through Something | By Kevin Love
So I did one seemingly little thing that turned out to be a big thing. "I was having trouble catching my breath", wrote Love. A few muffled (or so I thought) gags later, it became apparent to those around me that something was up.
The Congress was the single largest party bagging 21 seats. In Goa and Manipur, the BJP has formed coalition governments.
It is an interesting fact to know that it was Sarma who then, in the capacity of a Congress leader, had helped the Congress to come back to power in Meghalaya in 2010. The BJP, which won just two of the 59 seats it contested despite a high-voltage campaign, also played a role in influencing the parties to keep aside their differences and unite.
"This decision was taken unilaterally by the UDP and without consulting us". The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is an NPP led alliance government that has shown confidence in dealing with the problems the state is facing.
The Congress too tried to woo UDP for the formation of the government in the state in the wake of the fractured mandate that emerged on 3 March.
"We offered. either the UDP should lead the government or share power for two-and-a-half years".

TODAY'S FORECAST: Snow, high near 35
The lack of early snow accumulation had many doubting that a major winter storm was underway - if social media is any indication. As an area of low pressure over the Great Lakes dives southeastward, it'll bring snow across parts of Western New York.
