Diabetes can be divided into five separate types, not two

A Study Proposes Five New Distinct Types of Adult-Onset Diabetes
Breaking out these subgroups and recognising them as distinct types of diabetes could hopefully lead to better tailored treatment, the researchers say.
However, this study alone is not sufficient to lead to changes in diabetes treatment guidelines, as it was only based on groups of diabetes patients in Scandinavia.
Researchers then distinguished 5 distinct clusters that differ from today's classification: 3 severe and 2 mild forms of the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin - a key hormone that helps break down sugar.
Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90 percent to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults, according to the CDC, was split into four groups.
"Diabetes is not the grey mass we have been calling type 2 - there are really subsets of the disease that require different treatment", said Groop.
"A data-driven cluster analysis of six simple variables measured at diagnosis in adult patients with newly diagnosed diabetes identified five replicable clusters of patients with significantly different characteristics and risk of diabetic complications", the authors wrote.
Another severe category, called "severe insulin-resistant diabetes", is linked to obesity.
The outcomes, distributed in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, demonstrated the patients could be separated into five particular groups.

Cluster 1 - severe autoimmune diabetes, similar to the classical type 1, affected younger people who were otherwise healthy.
Cluster 1 describes diabetes similar to Type 1 diabetes wherein it is an autoimmune disease that affects young seemingly healthy people who can not produce insulin. And two other clusters, Mild Age-Related Diabetes (MARD) and Mild Obesity-Related Diabetes (MOD) seemed to be more benign forms of diabetes.
Cluster 5 - age related diabetes with patients developing symptoms when they were significantly older than other groups.
THE NUMBER of people in Dorset diagnosed with diabetes is at an all-time high it has been revealed.
Diabetes influences around one of every 11 grown-ups worldwide and expands the risk of heart assault, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and appendage removal. They found that the risk of kidney complications was substantially increased in patients with SIRD, while the risk of diabetic retinopathy was highest in those with SIDD.
Bunch 2 patients would as of now be named type 2 as they don't have an immune system sickness.
These findings are based on initial results of ANDIS - a study covering all newly diagnosed diabetics in southern Sweden. Of this, a majority - 39 to 47 per cent - were elderly people with mild diabetes while 18-20 per cent were obese.
Dr Emily Burns, head of research communications at Diabetes UK said finding diabetes subtypes could help patients, but that more work was needed. The new substratification might help to tailor and target early treatment to those who would benefit most.
The researchers plan to launch similar studies in China and India.
As for genetic links, there were no variants associated with all the clusters.
