Patriots Rumors: At least three teams in on Dion Lewis
Butler can agree to a deal with a new team once free agency officially opens on Wednesday.
Butler was released by the Patriots after a season in which he tallied 55 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes defensed. He eventually evolved into a critical piece of New England's secondary, but Bill Belichick surprisingly benched him (apart from special teams) for their defeat this past February to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 2015, Malcolm Butler was a New England hero; an undrafted free agent rookie who made the biggest play in Super Bowl history to secure a Patriots victory in Super Bowl 49. Butler played out the season on his restricted tender of $3.9 million.
Some have wondered whether the 28-year-old's down season in 2017, capped by the now infamous Super Bowl benching, would limit his market in free agency, but there still appear to be plenty of suitors. However, for a high profile position such as cornerback, it will be interesting to see just who that "next man up" will be in the Patriots defensive backfield. It's the blockbuster contract he sought but never received from the Patriots.
His deal is reportedly guaranteed for $11.5 million.
General manager Jon Robinson started in New England, head coach Mike Vrabel was a star linebacker with the Patriots, and now they are assembling a roster full of former Patriots.
Lewis led the Pats with 896 rushing yards on 180 carries (5.0 average) and six touchdowns in the 2017 regular season. Over the past two years, Butler continued to prove that his Super Bowl XLIX heroics were no fluke. General manager Jon Robinson got his start in the National Football League as a scout with the Patriots.
QB-needy teams have reached out to Drew Brees' agent
However, there has been a lack of progress made toward working out a new deal ahead of the start of the free agency period. However a unsafe situation could be evolving if the Vikings make an offer that blows the Saints' stance out the water.
