Florida Daylight Savings Time: Leap Ahead Sunday for Good?
09 March 2018, 02:10 | Myrtle Vega
It'll take time to recover from hour of lost sleep
For many people, daylight saving time is less about springing forward and more about falling behind on their sleep schedule. Just yesterday, the Florida legislature voted to stay in Daylight Saving time later this year, ending their participation. The Department of Transportation, which is in charge of DST and all time zones in the USA, thinks so.
But not every state in the US observes daylight saving time, including Hawaii and most of Arizona. That's why Florida would need congressional approval.
Other than Hawaii and Arizona, a handful of US territories - including American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands - do not observe daylight saving time. The Act established the system of uniform Daylight Saving Time throughout the US.
Next week is National Sleep Week and we'll be hearing more from Dr. Rummel on healthy sleep habits and why they are so important but for now start adjusting the time change now. The passage of the Energy Policy Act in 2005 extended daylight saving time by four weeks - from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November.
TODAY'S FORECAST: Snow, high near 35
The lack of early snow accumulation had many doubting that a major winter storm was underway - if social media is any indication. As an area of low pressure over the Great Lakes dives southeastward, it'll bring snow across parts of Western New York.
The entire southern hemisphere: A few countries, mostly in South America, do observe daylight saving time. And a study that same year from the University of California-Santa Barbara found it might even increase energy consumption. It will end at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
Hawaii and most of Arizona don't take part in DST. (Interestingly, Navajo lands in Arizona do observe daylight saving time.) Hawaii also refrains, because it is so far south it doesn't really have all that much of an effect anyway.
Florida is looking to eliminate the twice yearly changing of the clocks that begin and end Daylight Saving Time.
Our sleep cycle is impacted by our appetite, so try eating earlier if you want extra shut-eye before the start of Daylight Saving Time. A search on Change.org returns 1,466 petitions mentioning daylight saving time, most of which appear to support abolishing it.

What Is International Women's Day Anyway?
Women's representation in national parliaments stands, on average, at less than one quarter, and in boardrooms it is even lower. Subsequent International Women's Day protests demanded workplace safety regulations and remembered those who lost their lives.
New Nintendo Direct Airing Tomorrow
There seems to be a third-party port announcement for the Switch in every Nintendo Direct , with Dark Souls being the most recent. Some fans are hoping to see Super Smash Bros . in the presentation, while others are expecting to see that property pop up in E3.
Amazon mulling checking-account like product with big banks
A new checking account service would essentially entrench the Seattle-based company even further into the lives of its customers. The retailer would target "young consumers" and people without access to traditional checking accounts, the report says.
