The current Nvidia driver version is 391.01, so Oculus Rift users facing these issues have to roll back quite far. One possible explanation is that an Oculus security certificate expired today. Recently, a "black screen of death" began affecting users, and so far, the finger is being pointed at recent Nvidia driver updates as well as the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update from previous year.
"We're aware of an issue impacting people's ability to use Rift's software, and we're working to fix the problem", Oculus writes. "Our teams apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing you and appreciate your patience while we work on a resolution". Thankfully, there appears to be a workaround at present - by disabling the Automatically set System date and time option inside Windows, then changing your PC's date to a week or so ago, when the certificate was still valid.
Oculus hasn't given us a direct reason for this problem yet, but VR Focus reports that users and developers may have figured it out.
