"To me, it was evident that this was a military-style gun".

"This is going to be a protest of this situation", she said.

"I believe in transparency with the public and I believe they should see it", Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told the Sun Sentinel.

She added, "We should make sure that we put reasonable limits on things". If someone is determined to acquire one of these types of guns, there are ways to do it.

"And we don't do a great job of that, I'll agree with you", Moccia said.

She said she would like to see national leaders try a strategy that she saw work in Australia, when the government banned certain types of weapons and offered a buy-back program for gun owners.

Other schools approached this as a valuable learning experience. Rattigan sent a message to parents and guardians on the evening of March 14th concerning the actions of the students and the policy outlined in the student handbook about leaving school.

Justin says he hopes the US enacts stricter gun laws or places someone in schools to protect students. "It just worked out well that we had extra coverage today". Soon after beginning their moment of silence, the group was joined by a few dozen students and faculty, many of whom were members of a class in which the professor brought his students to the demonstration as a class activity.

The protest comes as part of a wave of activism created after last month's deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

"It's an wonderful honor to do something participating in this kind of activity for Parkland High School and hopefully Parkland gets to see this", student Sidney Whitlow-Cook said. "We should be able to rely on each other. if there's something wrong, we should be able to support each other and be there for each other".

"All school children watching this, need to really take this chance to use their voice and be heard", said Aaliyah Taylor, a student at Two Rivers. Students Kathryn Staebler of Jamestown, Olivia Legault of East Greenwich, Cat Brownell of Middletown, Sara McCormick of Wakefield and Bella Bianco of Warwick spearheaded the effort.

School officials said the students were respectful and poignant as they expressed their views.

The three schools have about 4,500 students enrolled.
