Report: Drew Brees agrees to 2-year extension with Saints
The Saints only have until Wednesday to sign Brees to a new deal or they're hit with an $18 million dead cap charge for Brees whether he's on their roster or not. This may largely be a reason for the strong interest from Cousins and could potentially sway Brees to consider if the contract situation in New Orleans doesn't work out.
As reported by ESPN, one of the very first teams to reach out to Drew Brees is the one that knocked his Saints out of the playoffs.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said the Vikings reached out to representatives for several quarterbacks as the NFL free-agent negotiating window began Monday afternoon. Well, Brees is technically available.
The entire offseason Brees has reiterated he'll be playing for the Black and Gold in 2018.
The 39-year-old future Hall-of-Famer presumably is chasing after another Super Bowl ring before his career ends.
It would really only be newsworthy if the Vikings hadn't reached out to Brees's camp.
And presumably Brees would want that, too, since he doesn't want to put the Saints in a bad financial position as they chase another Super Bowl together. Minnesota offers one of the most complete rosters in the National Football League on both sides of the ball that just earned a berth in the NFC Championship game. However a unsafe situation could be evolving if the Vikings make an offer that blows the Saints' stance out the water.
Brees re-structured his contract to cut a cap hit in 2016 almost in half, pro-rating a signing bonus of $18 million over three years, starting in 2018. However, there has been a lack of progress made toward working out a new deal ahead of the start of the free agency period.
