Understanding Kim: US Makes Efforts to Profile the Secretive North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un
North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un and the South's president Moon Jae-in will meet at the Military Demarcation Line that divides the peninsula for their summit Friday, Seoul said, in an occasion laden with symbolism.
The special chairs to be used by the two Korean leaders at the Peace House in the border village of Panmunjom, also features an emblem of the controversial island, along with the peninsula.
In addition to Friday's summit, there is also a planned meeting between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North's largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the site in northeastern North Korea unstable. It has made rapid progress in its weapons development under Mr Kim, who inherited power from his father in 2011.
Kune Yull Suh, a professor of nuclear engineering at Seoul National University, warned past year that further tests could threaten to cause a volcanic eruption at Mount Paektu, which is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) away.
Moon seized on the South's Winter Olympics as an opportunity to try to broker dialogue between them.
"That's what makes this summit all the more hard", he added.
At the end of talks, Kim and Moon will sign a pact and make an announcement, Im said.
"(Seoul) takes the move as a sign that the North is not considering just the inter-Korean summit, but looking ahead to the US-North Korea talks, and worldwide cooperation that will follow".
Official talks between Mr Moon and Mr Kim will begin at 10:30am local time, at the Peace House in Panmunjom.
The North's group will cross back to its side for lunch, and before the afternoon session the two leaders will plant a pine tree together.
The soil will come from Mount Paektu, on the North's border with China, and Mount Halla, on the South's southern island of Jeju.
Instead, they could reach a less ambitious interim deal to "end hostilities" - a move that comes very close to agreements brokered during previous inter-Korean summits in 2000 and 2007. "The fact is we haven't discussed anything", he said.
US authorities have also interviewed North Korean defectors and even resorted to second-hand sources such as the memoir of a Japanese sushi chef who once worked for the Kim family, several officials and experts said.
Among the nine delegates designated by Pyongyang are the country's honorary president Kim Yong-nam, Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho and Kim's sister Kim Yo-jong, who is director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers' Party of North Korea.
The train left at midnight, with high-level North Korean officials aboard along with China's ambassador and medical experts, said Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
