Local students to join National School Walkout set for Friday

Students at high schools across the country are expected to walk out of classes Friday, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, in their latest push for gun control.

Organized by four CT teens, Friday's walkout calls for students to leave class at 10 a.m., and pause for 13 seconds of silence to honor each of the victims in the Columbine High School shooting, in which two teens killed 12 students and one teacher in Littleton, Colorado. These trades of philosophies are structured around citizenship and responsible civic participation.

Since then, however, countless school shootings have unfolded, including the deadly massacre in Parkland, Florida, in February and a shooting at a Maryland high school in March of this year.

Meanwhile, places like Shen announced that students can protest, but only after school hours. Her school had regular lockdown drills after 26 students and educators were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School when she was in fifth grade. Some area schools will hold similar on-campus events this Friday. Educators are calling for sensible gun laws and other measures to protect their students. Students will gather outside the school from 10 to 10:13 a.m., one minute for every student killed at Columbine in 1999.

To her, and so many others, mass shootings can feel all too common in the U.S.

Now, schools can punish students involved with the walkout. "There are no plans to discipline students for mutually-agreed upon activities". Brandon Gillespie of Rocklin High School in California, one of the organizers behind the walkout, said the only accommodation his district gave was not punishing the protesters.

If students make the choice to leave class on April 20, administrators and teachers will not confront students. Students will be directed to return to class.

Regardless of demographics, most parents are anxious, with 63 percent of all those surveyed saying they are concerned about school shootings affecting their children. We are going to stay here, stay raising our voices ...

National Football League mock draft: Bills, Cardinals trade up for Pac-12 quarterbacks
Josh Allen is a prospect that a lot of the Cleveland fanbase will not like given their history with quarterbacks. Likewise, Allen will need to adjust to an offense where he doesn't just need to run and play YOLO ball so often.

At some schools, students will also take part in "know your rights" discussions, touching on issues like sexual harassment and police brutality.

What is the role of Washoe County School District employees?

-Flagler County Public School spokesperson " We'll be handling the same way we have been since the Parkland tragedy.

The group describes themselves as a progressive organization whose goal is to create a statewide body of student activists that can encourage and organize political action. There have been eight shootings in seven days, three of them involving students. They will have a moment of silence for the victims of Columbine, and will have speakers scheduled to follow.

Students who decide to participate in a walkout must acknowledge the limited amount of supervision that may be available, as the District does not have the resources to monitor the safety of students off campus.

What is the outcome if a student chooses to participate in a walkout?

Lane Murdock, a 16-year-old sophomore from Ridgefield, Connecticut, launched the National School Walkout.

In the midst of their grief, the student survivors of the Stoneman Douglas massacre have banded together and inspired a new student-led push for gun reform, with nationwide events such as school walkouts and the March for Our Lives rallies.
