APTOPIX Teacher Protests Kentucky

Many teachers were still reeling Monday from comments Bevin made last Friday, saying children were likely - he used the word guarantee at one point - subjected to abuse and danger when some school systems closed to allow teachers to travel to Frankfort for the protests. "I guarantee you somewhere today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them".

Now, politicians from both sides of the aisle have spoken out about Bevin's comments, and the Kentucky House officially gave him a condemnation.

In Bevin's apology, he acknowledged his comments caused many people to be hurt or confused.

In a almost 4-minute video posted Sunday, Bevin didn't apologize for what he'd said, however - only that he took responsibility for not being clearer.

House Republicans have said they see his comments as exacerbating the already complicated debate over teacher pensions, leading to the thousands of teachers that have descended on the Capitol in recent days. He went on to apologize "for those who have been hurt by the things that were said ... it was not my intent".

Bevin said he had teachers in his family and knew it was not an easy task.

"Gov. Bevin did offer what he called an apology, which is to essentially say, 'I am sorry you misunderstood me, '" said Charles Booker, a candidate for the Kentucky House of Representatives. "Let's work together, we need to work together", he said.

"I am grateful for Secretary Heiner's skilled and selfless leadership of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet over these past two and a half years", Bevin said in a statement. Could have said it better.

Teachers from across Kentucky gather inside the state Capitol to rally for increased funding for education, Friday, April 13, 2018, in Frankfort, Ky.

"The words that people say can have unintended consequences", he said.

"Governor Bevin claims there was a misunderstanding, but the people of Kentucky heard loud and clear what he said and today's video shows he still does not comprehend why so many were understandably upset", Adkins said in a statement.

Democrat Rep. James Kay of Versailles didn't hold back any sarcasm about Bevin's apology, either.

"For those of you who understand what I was saying, thank you", Bevin said in the social media. "His insults of teachers over the a year ago have been beneath the decorum of any respectable elected official".
