Three loud blasts were heard and three clouds of smoke could be seen in the sky above central Riyadh, according to witnesses. In a statement, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said it downed a drone targeting an airport in the southwestern province of Abha and another in Jazan. Last month, Saudi defences intercepted seven ballistic missiles fired at Riyadh and other cities by the Houthis, the biggest such barrage since the war began in March 2015.

A total of 18 Houthi rebels were killed and almost 30 others injured in the gunbattles with the national army forces in southwestern city of Taiz, according to a statement revealed by the media center of the pro-government forces in the city.

At least 48 fighters of the Shiite Houthi group were killed Wednesday in armed clashes with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and Saudi-led airstrikes in two locations of the war-torn country.
