The Gunners are now just three points behind their London rivals with six games left to play.
The south-coast club are now playing against Arsenal at The Emirates and they took an unlikely 0-1 lead thanks to everyone's favourite Tipperary man.
However, it was relegation-threatened Southampton who took a surprise 1-0 lead through Shane Long before the half-hour mark.
Long's last goal came against Crystal Palace in January where he also opened the lead before the Saints eventually went onto lose 2-1 at St. Mary's Stadium.
The forward had failed to score a Premier League goal in 2018 but struck twice in his side's 3-2 triumph at the Emirates Stadium, including heading in the victor in the 81st minute.
Arsenal equalled a record that has stood for nearly six decades at the club as Southampton became the latest victims of the Gunners' revival.
Welbeck narrowly failed to get on the end of a Wilshere cross after he hooked the ball back from the byline on 79 minutes.

Several residents in Mumbai complained about the traffic snarls in the city, including Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He must have given some injection that is why now Rahul Baba is daring to ask about four-and-half years of Modi government.
The game ended in bad-tempered fashion, with Southampton'sJack Stephens and Arsenal'sMohamed Elneny both sent off in the closing stages.
Cech denied Austin a second a few minutes later and Southampton must have thought their luck was in when Welbeck turned Wilshere's cushioned ball over an unguarded net.
Arsenal will travel to Moscow to face CSKA in Thursday's UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg encounter.
Charlie Austin then came off the bench to score with his first touch but Welbeck won it with his second goal of the game, ahead of a couple of late red cards. When Welbeck somehow contrived to scoop the ball over the bar from three yards soon after, Arsenal supporters must have feared their chance to win the game had gone.
However, Welbeck secured the win for the Gunners with 10 minutes remaining as he headed home Alexi Iwobi's cross at the far post.
"I'm happy with the assist, glad to get the goals". It just shows the level of competition in the Premier League.
"I am very pleased for him because he is a guy who went through a very hard time and has shown exceptional mental strength to come back", said Wenger.
