The hospital says continuing life-support treatment would not be in Alfie's best interests, but his parents disagree and say they want permission to fly him to Italy for treatment.

After surviving without life support for almost a week, 23-month-old Alfie Evans, who was terminally ill, has sadly passed away, his family announced on social media.

"Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 a.m. We are heart broken", his parents posted on Facebook.

Alfie's parents, Tom and Kate Evans, had been in a constant battle with the courts to overrule and keep their son alive. Hospital officials even went as far as misleading courts by saying that they never said Alfie would die quickly after his life support was removed - even though they initially said Alfie would die within minutes after yanking his life support over his parents' objections.

"Our lives have been turned upside down by the intense focus on Alfie and his situation", Evans said Thursday outside the Liverpool hospital.

He said: "Our little family along with Alder Hey has become the centre of attention for many people around the world and it has meant we have not been able to live our lives as we would like".

Above all, we must thank Tom and Kate for their unstinting love of their son, and the staff at Alder Hey Hospital for their professional care of Alfie.

Pope Francis, who had publicly supported Evans and James' campaign, wrote condolences that were posted Saturday on Twitter.

March 8: Alfie's parents ask for the case to be considered by Supreme Court justices. On Monday, the hospital withdrew life support, against his parent's wishes. In such cases, the rights of the child take primacy over the parents' right to decide what's best for their daughters and sons. He thanked the hospital staff "at every level for their dignity and professionalism during what must be an incredibly hard time for them too".

"All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them", the statement said. "This has been a devastating journey for them".

This occurred despite Italy granting Alfie citizenship so that he could arrive in the country and receive medical care.

Alfie's father had traveled to Rome earlier this month to meet Francis, who had expressed his backing for their cause, and a hospital in Rome offered to treat the toddler. Alder Hey asked for tributes to Alfie to be left in a park next door so the hospital's work wasn't disrupted. "My deepest condolences to his parents, who fought so hard for their courageous little boy".
