India looks to use new-found clout to seek better oil bargains

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that the United States would regret withdrawing from the nuclear deal, and that Iran would respond in "less than a week" if that happened.

U.S. sanctions that were lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) of 2015 will resume unless Trump waives them again on May 12.

One Republican foreign policy adviser who is close to the White House said:"This is exactly what President Trump means when he says the Iran deal is the worst agreement ever negotiated". Trump has effectively set that as a deadline for European powers to "fix the bad flaws" of the deal.

"Our response would be stronger - and swifter - than anything they can imagine", the Iranian president said in comments broadcast live on state television.

"(But) the foundations of the JCPOA (nuclear deal) have been so strong that during these 15 months of pressure. the structure has remained solid". His threats reveal what many deal skeptics have long argued: "unless the JCPOA is fixed, Iran has pathways to dozens of nuclear-tipped missiles capable of striking USA forces, United States allies, and eventually the U.S. homeland".

Rouhani's speech came in light of National Nuclear Technology Day in Tehran, where the country unveiled its latest nuclear achievements - including a nuclear battery and centrifuges for the oil industry.

In 2015, Iran and a group of world powers agreed to substantially curb Tehran's nuclear development in return for lifting economic sanctions.

He gave no details on what countermeasures Iran could take. Iran insists its efforts have been for research and technology, and that its missiles are purely defensive.

Without mentioning the U.S., he said other parties to the deal are "instigating Iran" to break its commitment to the agreement.

"We will produce any weapons necessary to defend our country in such a volatile region".
