New Jersey has been buzzing about who won the $553 million Mega Millions jackpot two weeks ago and come to find out, it's a MI man. Richard Wahl was revealed as the victor.
Wahl, who moved to Vernon, New Jersey, from MI with his family in late July for a job opportunity, waited two weeks before coming forward to claim the historic prize.
Richard Wahl bought the sole winning ticket for the March 30 jackpot at a Lukoil station in Riverdale, New Jersey.
Although the owner told New Jersey media last week that he knew who won, he was tight lipped on the person's identity.
His winning numbers were 11,28,31, 46 and 59, and the Mega Ball 1. "And I wasn't ready to share with her yet, so I told her, 'Absolutely not, mother'". It may have been only the second time he bought a ticket.
'For us the plan is to do a lot of good things with it, ' Wahl said.
He said he went back to the Lukoil to fuel up after he won but before he came forward. "Family, friends, people in need", he said, NorthJersey.com reported.
He declined to talk about his family, refusing to say whether he had kids.
The jackpot was the biggest ever in New Jersey. He said he was getting on a flight Friday night, but wouldn't say where he was going.
As Wahl checked his ticket during the Mega Millions drawing on March 30, he saw that the first five "easy pick" numbers matched the ones drawn and he was elated. He said his wife was from Mexico. He also plans to take care of his mother, who has been living on a reduced income.
After state and federal taxes, he was expected to take home roughly $175 million.
Mega Millions is played in 44 states and Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
