Numerous neighborhood's residents arrived at the police tape to air their frustrations over the shooting. Tragedies like this are why we fought for an independent Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit.

"We are seeing a range of worrisome rhetoric from the White House that sort of doubles down on what animated this policy, which is a presumption that Muslims are suspicious", he said.

Saheed Vassell, 34, was fatally shot Wednesday evening in Brooklyn by police officers responding to multiple 911 calls about a man threatening people with a gun.

NYPD officers responded to several 911 calls at 4.40pm on Wednesday reporting that a man in a leather jacket was pointing what appeared to be a silver gun at bystanders in Crown Heights. "There is also video from commercial establishments along Utica Avenue that shows a man brandishing what appears to be a firearm - pointing it at people".

The pipe-wielding Brooklyn man killed by NYPD cops was a hoarder who collected mostly metal junk that he stashed on his apartment building roof, the buildings super said Thursday.

Many in the community who gathered at the scene after the shooting were outraged by his death, calling it murder, reports CBS New York.

"There's a guy walking around the street".

"Where is the gun?" a dispatcher asked one caller. "And he's like popping it, as if like he's pulling the trigger". He was holding a metal pipe.

Police in NY have shot and killed a man carrying a metal pipe - mistaking it for a gun.

Brooklyn resident Eric Vassell told CNN affiliate NY1 that the victim was his 35-year-old son, Saheed.

Vassell's father also said that his son never acted violently and would, "just walk around the neighborhood and help people".

"Police had a choice". Bell and two of his associates opened fire on the officers and killed them. "They should train them to protect life, to save life as much as possible". They always have a choice.

Three different people phoned 911 and described a man with a gun who was pointing it at people in the street, police said in a statement on Wednesday.

"On the anniversary of the man who stood up for black people... you're going take a black man down with nine bullets", Smith said, as the shooting came on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. "I said to him, 'I don't know how to use a computer.' He said, 'Auntie, I got you'". "And that is what is happening today in the police force".

"The suspect then took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed an object at the approaching officers", Monahan said.

By state law, the attorney general is appointed as a special prosecutor to oversee investigations into and prosecute matters related to incidents in which unarmed civilians die during interactions with police or incidents in which there is significant question as to whether the civilian was armed and risky, Spitalnick said, citing the law.
