Islam Herzallah, 28, who was shot and critically injured by Israeli forces at the eastern border of the Gaza Strip, was announced dead of his wounds on Friday evening, according to the Ministry of Health.

For the third consecutive week, thousands of Palestinians joined the protests in Gaza Strip against Israel's refusal to allow Palestinian refugees to return to their pre-1948 homes, news reports said.

Israeli troops shot and wounded 30 Palestinians during a protest on the Gaza-Israel border yesterday in which demonstrators hurled stones and burned tyres near the frontier fence, Palestinian medics said.

The heavy shooting of bullets and tear gas by Israeli army did not prevent women demonstrators from joining the weekly rallies in border areas.

The protests since March 30 have posed a challenge to Israel, which has dismissed criticism of its use of live fire, saying its rules of engagement are necessary and will not change.

"We will return to Palestine, our villages and Jerusalem", Haniyeh said in a fiery speech at one of five protest camps set up along the border.

In the camp, 37-year-old construction worker Omar Hamada said he is protesting to draw world attention to Gaza and get the border reopened.

The ministry said 419 of them were moved to hospitals and medical centers, and 550 received treatment in field clinics and makeshift hospitals near border areas. One path toward lifting the blockade would be to have Hamas' political rival, West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, take over the Gaza government, but recent Egypt-led talks on such a deal have run aground.

GAZA- An explosion in the southern Gaza Strip killed four Palestinians on Saturday, the local health ministry said.

In two weeks, 34 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire, including 27 during protests.
