Pentagon: Unclear whether National Guard troops sent to border will be armed

Governors could be powerless to deny Trump troop request

National Guard troops headed for border Friday night

The law also forbids them from performing tasks of civilian law enforcement unless explicitly authorized, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The plan's only goal is to "appease Trump, who is increasingly angry that his border wall vanity project has stalled", Kamal Essaheb, policy and advocacy director at the National Immigration Law Center, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Brown, a Democrat, sent a series of tweets about the directive, which Trump said is to protect and enforce the border until the wall can be built.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said that troops would be deployed "immediately" and that she had already spoken to four governors whose states share the border. Christian Patterson says about 3,500 MS soldiers are now training in Texas for deployment later this year to the Middle East.

The Democratic governor added that she has not been contacted by Trump or any federal officials to send forces to the border, but that if she were, she would refuse.

Brown criticised Trump for his poor handling of state affairs, saying, "This administration is governing through chaos and incompetence".

The White House said Trump signed the memo to direct his administration to study ways of ending such policies, which generally refer to the release of unauthorized immigrants while they await hearings instead of keeping them in custody.

"We'd like to stop it before the numbers get even bigger", she said.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said his state would "answer the call", just as it has done in other times of need, like historic floods.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican, on Friday became one of the latest leaders to oppose the plan.

Korea seeks summit with Trump in Pyongyang
Working-level officials need to determine how Kim would arrive at the southern side of the border village for the summit. The announcement comes after a year of tension between the U.S., North Korea and South Korea. .

She says Sandoval doesn't believe the current proposal would be "an appropriate use" of the Nevada Guard.

Her spokesman, Bryan Hockaday, acknowledged she might not have a say.

The National Guard is expected to help border agents in tasks of 'aerial detection, transportation, fix of the border wall and logistical support, ' the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) said.

That's very different from a Title 10 order, which the governor likely could not reject depending on the nature of the request.

Writing in USA Today, columnist and attorney Raul A. Reyes said the president is exhibiting a lack of leadership.

Bush announced the deployment in Yuma, as part of a larger immigration reform plan.

About 150 Guard members will deploy next week, Ducey said.

White announced that the Pentagon was creating a new Border Security Support Cell made up of several DoD representatives who would work 24/7 to be the "single conduit for information and coordination between the Pentagon and DHS". Nielsen said she would be speaking with California Gov.

Trump is not the first USA president to send soldiers to the border with Mexico: in 2006, George W. Bush ordered the deployment of some 6,000 members of the National Guard, and Barack Obama assigned 1,200 members in 2010. George Bush sent around 6,000 personnel in 2006, while Barack Obama deployed 1,200 Guard members back in 2010.

The Republican Burgum said in a statement from his office Friday that governors of states along the border with Mexico are in the best position to say whether Guard troops are needed.
