Prince Philip, 96, to undergo hip surgery after missing royal family's Easter service

Prince Philip's hip operation to involve general anaesthetic

The Duke of Edinburgh is "comfortable and in good spirits" after a successful hip replacement operation, Buckingham Palace has said.

The 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone yesterday for the procedure.

It is understood that the operation will require a general anaesthetic.

There are certain conditions upon which the Duke of Edinburgh will be able to attend the royal wedding, it has been said.

But Philip does not walk with the aid of a stick as the Queen Mother did and was spotted last week driving himself around Windsor Great Park, leading to speculation he may have a problem with torn cartilage.

Having the operation as early as possible is "probably a sensible choice if he's to feel in better shape for his grandson's big day", Sky News's royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills says. At times blunt to the point of rudeness, Philip is Elizabeth's most important support. Two months later the infection recurred and he was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

North Korea sanctions: United Nations blacklists shipping firms
However, the situation has eased significantly since North Korea in February sent athletes to the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The latest restrictions are directed not just at North Korea's shipping operations but Chinese companies trading with Pyongyang.

A source told People that Philip had been experiencing "trouble with his hip". When it was announced past year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and that he had the full support of the Queen.

Philip is not the only member of the Royal family to undergo a hip operation in their 90s. He has carried out some 22,000 solo royal engagements since Elizabeth became queen in 1952.

The two were introduced in 1939 when then princess Elizabeth's father king George VI and his family toured the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, in England's south coast, where Philip was a cadet.

This evening's announcement confirms that The Queen's husband underwent a full hip replacement procedure. Buckingham Palace announced in August he was readmitted to the hospital while on his annual Scottish summer at Balmoral.

There will be physiotherapy exercises to do at home and crutches are needed for about four to six weeks. Details about the hip surgery, however, have not been revealed.

Patients tend to feel back to normal after about three months.
