United Nations calls for restraint ahead of renewed Palestinian protests at Gaza fence

09 April 2018, 12:53 | Myrtle Vega

Gaza was the scene of deadly clashes on Friday, prompting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to call on the United Nations, the Arab League and the European Union to take immediate action against the Israeli violence.

The UN office noted that Israeli security forces are required by worldwide human rights law to respect the rights to peaceful assembly and expression and to use, to the extent possible, non-violent means to discharge their duties.

The six other deaths included three gunmen killed in what Israel said were attempts to attack the border and three men who were struck by Israeli tank fire. She also said there were "ominous statements" from Israeli authorities leading up to protests.

Arab ambassadors are urging the United Nations secretary-general to launch an independent investigation into the killing of 18 Palestinians during a protest march last week against a stifling decade-old Israeli blockade of Gaza. It has also devastated Gaza's economy, made it virtually impossible for people to enter and exit the territory, and left residents with just a few hours of electricity a day. "And that if there is unjustified and unlawful recourse to firearms, resulting in death, that may amount to a willful killing", Elizabeth Throssell said in Geneva.

The Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullet and tear gas at the rallies which wounded at least 1,400 so far.

"Despite this, since last Friday the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) have been dealing with tens of thousands of people approaching the fence, all instigated by Hamas", it added.

Hamas's leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, hailed the protests and condemned Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

At least nine Palestinians have been martyred by Israeli forces in the second mass protest along Gaza border.

Refugees make up most of the 2 million people in Israeli-blockaded Gaza, an enclave ruled by the Islamist movement Hamas, which calls for Israel's destruction and is designated by Western states as a terrorist organization.

According to the IDF, which has declared the immediate area a closed military zone, Hamas has been attempting to create a "war zone" in the region with protests in five locations along the Gaza-Israel border.

On Thursday, Lieberman threatened to respond to the protests in the "harshest" manner if the demonstrators approach the fence separating Israelis and Palestinians. Israel's army said it "does not intentionally target journalists".

Some have also called Friday's protest "Black Friday".

The UN chief has urged Israel to "exercise extreme caution" with the use of force in Gaza.

Hana Awad, his colleague and close friend, said he had long dreamt of traveling and was recently granted an Al Jazeera scholarship for training in Doha.
