Verstappen hit the wall at the end of Q1 meaning he starts Sunday's race down in 15th place

Hamilton was favorite to win at the season opening Australian Grand Prix in March, but a computer glitch for the Mercedes team handed the win to Vettel, who was looking at third place before the slice of good fortune came his way.

When's the Bahrain GP on Sky? "Hopefully, when we go to the next race, we will have a better fight with the Ferraris".

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas will also take on a new gearbox, but - under the sport's rules - avoids a penalty as he is permitted a free change after his qualifying crash in Australia.

In the end, Bottas took the second place while Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari emerged as the eventual victor of the race with an official time of 1:32:01.940.

As both men were pushed out wide, Hamilton would clip the left-rear tyre of the Red Bull causing a puncture with the 20-year-old having to retire soon after citing other damage.

The next race is in less than a weeks' time at the Shanghai International Circuit, China, and Hamilton is keen to get back to winning ways on circuit where he has won five times in the past.

"These races we can't afford to be losing to Ferrari, so we need to get ourselves in a place where we're not only strong in our operations in the auto, but also in the race".

"It may switch race to race but I can tell you it's going to be a bloody close championship".

"I think to myself if Fernando [Alonso] was in that vehicle he would have finished a decent race and got points for Red Bull".

Danny Welbeck hits double and two sent off as Arsenal beat Southampton
However, it was relegation-threatened Southampton who took a surprise 1-0 lead through Shane Long before the half-hour mark. Welbeck narrowly failed to get on the end of a Wilshere cross after he hooked the ball back from the byline on 79 minutes.

Hamilton's Mercedes team revealed that the British driver suffered a hydraulics leak at the curtain raiser in Melbourne, adding that he was even fortunate to finish the race.

"Today was all about damage limitation and I think to get in the top three is a really great result for the team and for myself".

Verstappen, surprisingly, has not hit back.

He clipped Hamilton's wheel and suffered a puncture, with the damage to his auto causing Verstappen to retire from the race.

Verstappen said: "He is just out of the auto there".

However, Verstappen's boss Christian Horner had gone a step further, saying that racing incidents are exactly what fans want to see.

Hamilton though felt Verstappen had been too forceful with the move.

After the Ferrari driver had finished, Hamilton said he "didn't remember" making the comment.
