Apple disappointed with iPhone X sales

Apple plows US tax cuts into record share buybacks

Tax break yields boon for Apple shareholders

Apple's 3D Touch technology will be dropped from future iPhone models as the company works to drive down costs, according to a Tech Times report.

Analysts now expect earnings of $2.69 a share in the March quarter on sales of $61.1 billion, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Instead, analysts fearApple missed the mark by launching one redesigned model that is too expensive and two other new devices, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, that essentially look the same as older models. Most 3D features can easily be replaced with a simple touch-and-hold method, or long-pressing as it's more commonly called.

Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz cut his sales and earnings estimates for Apple for the next two years.

However, the company's shares have softened following a succession of gloomy trading updates from suppliers such as Qualcomm, Samsung and TSMC, which have warned that iPhone sales are slowing down.

Apple plans to add the CGS technology to OLED iPhones in 2019.

The report follows news from Bloomberg that demand for the iPhone X was fading, based on reports from Apple's device assemblers. That could bring the price close to $700, a level that's proven successful for many years. The benefit of this new technology is that it will make the iPhone's display lighter and more resistant to impact. If something as trivial as 3D Touch increases costs in production but offers very little in terms of functionality, then it's only logical for Apple to have it removed.

For most companies, one product facing growth headwinds wouldn't be a concern.

Apple previously launched a pair of truly wireless earbuds, the AirPods, that eliminate the need for a headphone port...assuming the iPhone owner wants to use the product.

The phone is estimated to be priced at around £340 or £349, which positions it as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone X, which still costs more than £800 without tax. A saturated smartphone market means Apple can't do much about the first problem, but its pricing strategy can vary depending on the specific iPhones being offered. It's important to note that Apple hasn't confirmed this change.
