Sessions' visit comes about a week after hundreds of Central American migrants traveled to the US border seeking asylum following a month-long caravan through Mexico.
But by referring immigrants caught illegally crossing for criminal charges, the move means that if an adult comes across the border with children, they will be separated from those children as they await their criminal proceedings. But Sessions's latest announcement-in addition to plans he announced on Wednesday to address the roughly 150 migrants seeking asylum at the border-has dramatically altered expectations. "If you cross this border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you".
Families seeking asylum should turn themselves into authorities so their petitions can be processed instead of attempting to cross illegally, the official added. He denied that that Trump administration has a "blanket policy" to separate families as a way to deter others from trying.
