Greitens' Attorneys Want A Judge, Not Jury, To Rule In Case

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens faces possibility of impeachment later this spring. File
The defense team representing Governor Eric Greitens is again asking the judge presiding over his criminal invasion of privacy case to waive a jury trial. His accuser, a hairdresser with whom Greitens had sex several times in 2015 claims the then-Navy Reserve officer Greitens violently initiated the sexual encounter and then took photographs of the pair, threatening to release them if she spoke about their affair.
The governor filed court documents today asking for a waiver to get a bench trial - a judge turned him down on this once already.
"Members signed this petition because they believe in a fair process that will not be rushed to conclusion by an artificial deadline", says Richardson.
"The House investigative committee has done outstanding work to date, but as we near the end of the regular legislative session, it is clear the committee needs additional time to finish building its case and prepare articles of impeachment for the House to consider". A Missouri House panel is also investigating the governor, and the motion criticizes the committee for releasing two reports so close to the trial.
Greitens faces his first criminal trial May 14 related to an invasion of privacy charge stemming from an extramarital affair he had before he took office.
Although lawmakers gathered more than the constitutionally required signatures of three-fourths of the members of each chamber to summon themselves into a special session, some wavered before finally agreeing to the plan.
Missouri lawmakers will convene a historic special session to consider possible disciplinary action against Gov. Eric Greitens.
"The vast majority felt with what has transpired, there was enough need for us to go into special session", said state Sen.
Republican Rep. Bryan Spencer, of Wentzville, said Friday he initially signed the petition a couple of weeks ago "to find out what the truth is" about the allegations against the governor.
He has since come under renewed fire over questions raised by his use of the donor list to his former charity, The Mission Continues, when he was running for governor. The report included testimony from a former Greitens' aide indicating the campaign also falsely identified the source of the donor list in a settlement with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
The woman agreed to testify only after the allegations that the governor had photographed without her consent were widely reported in the media.
