TKMS Ryan Reynolds in disguise

Ryan Reynolds in disguise

The sequel to Ryan Reynolds' passion project shoulders a lot when it comes to the X franchise, but it sort of suffers because of that.

Deadpool 2 is kind of like that zany guy you met at a party once. But it did have one thing going for it: Ryan Reynolds, who gave his all in the role he was born to play, and whose undeniable charisma and nonstop, meta patter (provided with the help of screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) literally carried the entire picture. When asked again about the possibility of a threequel by Variety, Reynolds sounded a lot more hopeful. Out of nowhere, with no explanation behind the device at all, introduces a collar that completely suppresses all mutant abilities, which is such a far-fetched invention even for this genre that it's hard to take seriously. "But it's Deadpool 2 that is the more emotional and entertaining of the two, while tweaking the nose of Infinity War's hype", comments Hugh Armitage of Digital Spy. The no-nonsense villain that obviously meshes so well with Deadpool's personality (always being accused of racism in one of the sequel's better running jokes) has traversed backwards to murder a heavyset 14-year-old mutant with fire throwing abilities (the hilariously spunk Julian Dennison from Taika Waititi's outstanding Hunt for the Wilderpeople) for an unspecified reason, but the result is a movie that lovingly tributes The Terminator, even to the point of breaking the fourth wall and pointing out script gripes that people have had for decades now. So Wade pulls together an X-Force - including Domino (Atlanta's Zazie Beetz), Bedlam (Terry Crews), the Vanisher (a surprise A-list actor), Zeitgeist (It's Bill Skarsgard), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) and a guy with no powers whatsoever (Rob Delaney) - to stop Cable and save the boy.

It's actually amusing how much can't be in the trailers because of how much it would spoil the fun, so I obviously won't do that here.

This first scene acts as something of a flawless thesis statement for how Deadpool will be this go-around: If you didn't understand the previous paragraph without more thorough context, you're in for a rough go at getting 95 percent of the humor here, as Deadpool 2 is even more meta than the original, if that's possible, never not taking the piss out of its sister X-Men movies, as well as DC and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Facebook bans foreign ads targeting Irish abortion referendum
Facebook has moved to block foreign advertisements relating to the upcoming Irish referendum on the Eighth Amendment. Under Irish law, foreign citizens and groups are not allowed to make donations to Irish campaign groups.

At the same time, though, this movie's got much more of a sense of brand synergy than the first one had. As he trades quips with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and her pink-haired girlfriend, Deadpool makes predictable jokes about the whereabouts of the rest of the X-Men (only one of which will make you laugh). They aren't why movie-goers love Deadpool, of course, and they aren't what makes "Deadpool 2" such a fun way to spend a couple hours, but they add depth, something relatable amid the almost nonstop zaniness. And he kinda can't be that. He is the ideal straight man to Reynolds' outlandish Deadpool. There's also a string of cameos that are all the better for remaining unspoiled. Beetz's Domino doesn't quite get the same chance to explore her famous character, but Beetz establishes a formidable physical presence in her fight scenes as well as a sly cynical distance from the boys.

I also have to say the action sequences feel much less special than they did in Deadpool. There's nothing particularly great or memorable, and that's a shame given Leitch's inventiveness on previous films like John Wick and Atomic Blonde.

But once Cable enters the story things get good. It'll be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out on screen.
