Lawyer Emmet Flood, who advised President Bill Clinton in impeachment proceedings, will assist President Donald Trump with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election, replacing Ty Cobb, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Wednesday.

A source familiar with Cobb's departure said the former federal prosecutor, who joined Trump's legal team in July 2017, had been clashing with the president in recent weeks over Trump's combative posture with the special counsel's investigation.

Cobb took the lead of the White House team after the previous lead lawyer, John Dowd, quit in March, convinced that Trump was not following his advice.

Behind the scenes, as Mr. Cobb rushed to turn over records to Mr. Mueller, his relationship soured with the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, who thought Mr. Cobb should have more thoroughly reviewed documents and been willing to assert executive privilege.

According to the source, White House Counsel Don McGahn advocated for bringing Flood onto Trump's team.

"Emmet Flood will be joining the White House staff to represent the President and the administration against the Russian Federation witch hunt", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

The shakeup of Trump's legal team comes as his lawyers prepare for a legal showdown with Mueller, sources familiar with their thinking have told CNN.

Trump initially said he was eager to be interviewed, but his perspective on Mueller soured a raid last month targeting his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, in a separate investigation.

Belying their concerns, Trump and Republicans in Congress have threatened to remove Mueller and other senior Justice officials, a move that top members of Congress have also warned could result in Trump's impeachment. Earlier Wednesday, the President suggested that questions by Mueller's team about whether he obstructed justice amount to a "setup & trap".

Or just maybe it's another version of Trump's four-dimensional chess and he's just confounding the system once again. "That's not going to happen, I'll tell you that".

With their first pick of the NFL Draft's fourth round , they added Pitt cornerback Avonte Maddox at 125 overall. Anderson, coming off a 1,000-yard rushing season, has attracted interest from the Eagles per a source.

Trump tweets, "The questions are an intrusion into the president's Article 2 powers".

"To remind him that this will not be that kind of interview", he explained.

John Roberts now serves as the chief White House correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC).

Joshua Stueve, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the reports.

"You had the discovery phase, and now you're entering the litigation phase", said the person, who requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Cobb and McGahn hold different views on how cooperative the White House should be with the special counsel investigation.

Neither side wants a subpoena fight over an interview. Mueller's willingness to obtain a subpoena could also be a bargaining chip as he tries to get the President to voluntarily sit down with him.

How Cobb's exit changes Trump's strategy remains to be seen, but he told ABC News Wednesday that Trump sitting for an interview with Mueller was "certainly not off the table".

In private conversations, Trump has occasionally invoked his late attorney Roy Cohn, a hard-charging figure who taught him to punch back at enemies.

Donald Trump's top lawyer in charge of dealing with the Russian Federation probe, Ty Cobb, said he would be retiring after only weeks of leading the defense team.
